When to Call the Minister…

Sometime in the 1950’s the Universalist minister, Rev. Peter Lee Scott, published a church newsletter article that has been re-cast, edited, added to, and re-published hundreds of times in other church newsletters over the decades. It’s a simple list of some of the reasons to reach out to your minister. And, I hope you’ll consider these time-tested suggestions:

• When you haven’t met me yet, but would like to.
• When you have problems to discuss—about anything.
• When a sympathetic ear might help.
• When you’re going into the hospital or know someone else who is.
• When someone close to you dies or is critically ill.
• When you’re considering getting married.
• When your child graduates from college.
• When you have a child to be dedicated.
• When you’re pregnant but wish you weren’t – or glad that you are.
• When you want to learn more about Unitarian Universalism.
• When you’re scared.
• When you’ve been arrested, or ought to be.
• When you’d like to make a bequest to the church.
• When you’re proud of your adult child – or concerned about them.
• When you’re considering joining the congregation.
• When a friend of yours wants to know more about our faith.
• When you’d like to help with committee work or congregational activities.
• When you want to discuss community issues or would like our involvement.
• When you’re mad at me
• When you’d like to talk religion.

This is not an exhaustive list – nor is it intended to be. I hope you won’t hesitate to reach out for many other reasons as well. But, if you find yourself experiencing any of the above, please do reach out – you and I will be glad that you did.
