The Democratic Imperative
People seem to like the idea of democracy when their side wins. And yet it seems that the true value of democracy is not just about using our right to vote but is also about what we all do after the vote. No matter who wins on election day, democracy does not end at the ballot box.
As we sit now in the midst of an election that is too close to call, where each side is convinced of the fallacies of the other, where families and neighborhoods are torn apart because of ideologies, it is imperative that we take up those other tasks of democracy: listening and repair. What have we not heard from the other side? What will be in need of repair in order to move us forward as a democratically united country?
