Our Share the Plate Recipient for the Month of May is Westbay Farm

Westbay Farm was founded in 2005 on the 240-year-old Barton Farm to provide fresh chemical-free produce to low- and moderate-income people. In 2019, Westbay Farm grew 23,000 pounds of produce, 70 percent of which was distributed by Westbay Community Action’s Marketplace food pantry in Buttonwoods and other pantries expanding the nutritious choices for low-income eligible clients. Farm produce is also available to the public through the Kent Hospital cafeteria (Thursday market) and at special sales. Westbay also has pop up markets at Sparrows Point and Shalom senior housing in Warwick, Wescott Terrace in West Warwick and the Sharing Locker at Westminster Unitarian Church in East Greenwich.

Presently Westbay Farm is a three-acre farm, its largest crops are lettuce, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, and squash. The City of Warwick owns the land and leases it to Westbay Community Action. The City of Warwick’s Community Development Service Grant and Episcopal Charities provide financial support. The farm could not operate without the dedicated work of volunteers.  Westbay Farm is managed by Steve Stycos. (New volunteers are needed weekdays).
